Kinematically adapted decoy flares constitute an important asset in the IRCM solution to fight a broad array of infrared guided anti-aircraft missiles with sophisticated IR-counter-countermeasures. Kinematically adapted decoy flares shall separate in an accelerated and controlled manner than conventional decoys that more or less tumble down on a ballistic trajectory. For that purpose a trimming weight at the front end of the decoy maybe necessary. The open literature provides a wide array of technical solutions to facilitate a decoy flare with a realistic that is target type flat trajectory without tumbling. A feasible approach to is to provide a flare payload with a weighted nose. A weighted nose however has two main disadvantages. At first a weight is an inert part that reduces the amount of pyrotechnic payload and secondly the weight after consumption of the flare grain may pose a risk to damage other aircraft (FOD).
This presentation discusses payload concepts using autophagous nose cones based on energetic materials that actively contribute to the infrared signature of the main flare grain. Solutions for both blackbody and spectrally adapted flare payloads are discussed.
